What’s in My Suitcase? Spring Break Essentials

Written by Ana Massoglia

It’s finally that time of year again. Packing for spring break is a form of art, and one that I am still perfecting: finding that balance between looking good, feeling comfortable and not overpacking. At this point in the semester, we all deserve some rest, relaxation and sunshine.

Here is how to pack without bringing the entire contents of your closet, while still curating  outfits that feel intentional, versatile and on-trend.

The key to packing efficiently is choosing pieces that can be worn multiple ways. Instead of packing full outfits, I focus on a color palette–neutrals with some statement colors–and build around that. A simple tank can be worn to the beach during the day and dressed up with jewelry and linen pants at night. The goal is to make every piece work harder.

Swimwear That Doubles as Style

Swimwear isn’t just for the water. A well-fitted bikini or one-piece can easily double as a top when paired with an oversized button-down or a flowy skirt. Packing a mix of classic and statement bathing suits adds variety without taking up much space, and gives you more outfit options overall.

The Art of Layering in Warm Weather

Even the warmest destinations come with cooler nights or overly air-conditioned restaurants. A lightweight sweater or oversized button-down is essential, not just for warmth, but for adding dimension to otherwise simple outfits. These pieces also double as cover-ups, making them some of the most flexible items in your suitcase. You can never be too prepared for a drop in temperature.

Shoes That Actually Make Sense

Shoes take up the most space, so narrowing them down is key. I like to stick to three pairs: comfortable sneakers for travel, everyday sandals, and one slightly elevated option for going out like heels or boots. Anything beyond that tends to be unnecessary and takes up valuable real estate in your suitcase.

Accessories as the Finishing Touch

Accessories are what make a packed wardrobe feel complete. A pair of gold hoops, a simple necklace stack and a good pair of sunglasses can elevate even the most basic outfit. They take up minimal space but make a noticeable difference in how everything comes together. Consider bringing accessories that are dynamic and light.

Keeping Beauty Minimal

Spring break beauty is all about ease. Instead of a full routine, I bring the essentials: tinted moisturizer, mascara, blush and a gloss. The goal is to look effortless, not overdone, especially in warm weather. A tan is the only makeup you truly need!

The “Just in Case” Rule

There’s always the temptation to throw in extra pieces “just in case,” but I try to limit this to one or two items. Whether it’s a nicer outfit for dinner or a piece I’m unsure about, setting a boundary helps avoid overpacking while still leaving room for flexibility.

At the end of the day, packing well comes down to intention. If every piece can be styled multiple ways and fits the overall vibe, you’re doing it right. The rest? You won’t miss it.

Spring break is about making the most of your trip, and your suitcase. No matter where you are headed, warm or cold, your clothes are going to define your comfortability and expression in a new place. Pack effectively and have fun. Happy spring break!
