The Vault x August Run Club
Written by Robin Schleusner
This semester, The Vault partnered with August, a Madison-based small business to host a series of events. The first was a Run Club, which August hosts every Monday night. Whether you are an avid or non-runner, you are equally welcome and encouraged to take part in the event. This served as a great opportunity to connect with fellow members, take a look around the August Shop on State Street, and enjoy outdoor movement before colder weather settles in. As the event was open to all running levels, it emphasized inclusivity and camaraderie, allowing participants to follow their own pace and take part in the run in whatever way felt most comfortable for them.
After warming up in the shop and settling into conversations, runners began the five-kilometer route through Madison at around 7:15 pm. The scenic course showcased views of both the natural and urban scenes that Madison has to offer. The route began facing the Capitol building, before navigating the nearby streets and making its way toward James Madison Park. When passing by the park, runners could enjoy a view of beautiful Lake Mendota, with its water sparkling under the moonlight. Participants then began making their way toward The Sylvee, a popular concert venue in Madison, which is around the backside of the Capitol building. After passing by The Sylvee, the course turned towards the Monona Terrace, where runners could appreciate the view of Madison from the other side of the isthmus, looking out onto Lake Monona. By highlighting these views of Madison, the five-kilometer course acted almost as a tour of the downtown, and was an equally enjoyable experience for local students from Madison and out-of-state The Vault members who are new to the city.
Runners met at August Shop on 414 State Street shortly before 7:00 pm to mingle, warm up, explore the space, and browse the apparel that were on display. For many, this run club served as an opportunity to discover a local business, and to meet new faces or even connect with familiar ones. This relaxed, community-focused environment set the tone for the rest of the evening and for an enjoyable and refreshing run around downtown Madison, adding to the welcoming energy of the run club.
Depending on their pace, runners began to trickle into August Shop again around 8:00 pm, where they were welcomed back with samples of nourishing smoothies and juices provided by Pure Green, a juice bar with locations in Madison. Runners were encouraged to taste-test all of the provided flavors of the smoothies and juices, all of which were refreshing and delicious rewards after the run. This prompted friendly comparison and conversation surrounding the beverages.
Overall, The Vault’s collaborative event with August Run Club proved to be a great way to meet new members in the organization, enjoy outdoor exercise, and to experience two State Street businesses: August and Pure Green. The event ultimately strengthened a sense of community within The Vault by providing a fun and supportive environment that fostered connection among participants.
