What the Cool Girls are Wearing to Class this Fall
Written by Ava Palmieri
As the leaves turn and the morning air crisps, one thing is clear: fall fashion is officially back. While sweatshirts and sweatpants remain classic staples, UW-Madison students are taking class outfits to the next level and transforming basic outfits into eye-catching ensembles. Every morning on my walk to lecture, I find myself taking mental (and sometimes even physical) notes on the effortlessly cool outfits that catch my eye, many of which I attempt to recreate later. For those who do not pay as close attention to clothes as I do, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite trends that I have spotted in Madison this fall.
The first piece that I have seen numerous times are wrap sweaters. These are often layered with some sort of tank top underneath, which adds a pop of color or texture, and the tie detail adds shape, which creates a more flattering silhouette. Paired with jeans and boots or dressed down with leggings and sneakers, it's an effortless and chic look that’s perfect for that early morning lecture.
Another common style I've seen is the ¾ length sleeve top. Perfect for showing off watches and bracelet stacks, these tops add uniqueness and flare to otherwise basic outfits. I’ve often seen these paired with some sort of denim, often low rise baggy jeans or a denim mini skirt. It’s also the perfect staple top to match with a fun sneaker or a ballet flat.
Another simple yet striking combination I’ve seen this fall is a hoodie under a denim jacket. The high-low effect of the layered hood and jacket adds complexity and structure to a basic look, while still being warm and comfortable. I love this combination with leggings and chunky sneakers for a sporty yet chic look.
How can we talk about effortlessly cool outfits without touching on accessories? Accessories are undeniably the most important part of any outfit, so here are a few that have caught my eye this fall. Long statement necklaces are everywhere, adding a touch of personality to the most minimal looks. I have also spotted several funky belts, decorated in studs, fringe, and bright colors. Adding these belts to an outfit can make something as basic as a white tee shirt and jeans look cool and stylish, and adds a personalized touch. They are also a great statement piece to add over dresses, rompers, or mini skirts paired with boots for a night out. Another classic accessory that is trending everywhere are chunky tortoise shell glasses. Whether they are blue light filtering or prescription, they add so much character and style to a laid back look. I often see these paired with very casual outfits, like sweat-sets or athleisure.
Fall campus fashion is all about finding a balance between style and comfort, and UW-Madison students have mastered it. There is a way to conform each trend to your own interests and bring your personal style to any stylish look. Hopefully this gave you some inspiration to add an extra touch of personality to your next class outfit this fall.
