The Sandwich Method

Written by Cecilia Becken

You don't need a massive wardrobe to look polished; you just need to know how to sandwich your clothes. Fall has just begun and layers are a need in this Madison weather. As a college student frequently searching for the right outfit with the right layers to accommodate an early walk to class in the chilly air to an afternoon walk up Bascom in the sun, the sandwich method has saved me countless times. The Sandwich Method is a fashion trend seen on Pinterest, TikTok, and Instagram, executed by simply matching the top half of your clothes with the same color shoes. It's all about coordination! A simple formula for this method in an athleisure outfit, paired with a white hat/sweatshirt,black flare pants, and a white sneaker. For a casual going-to-class outfit, a cream knit sweater, straight-leg denim, and cream Boston Birkenstocks perfectly elevate an undecided outfit. Finally, for a business casual outfit, pair a blue and white striped button down with a draped olive sweater, white slacks and an olive green pair of mules.

Several brands have the perfect basics and pops of color for this method. Aritzia, a Canadian brand, has excelled at building a catalog full of classic pieces that effortlessly work together while also having styles with bright blues, pinks and greens. Steve Madden is a great retailer for fun pops of color in shoes while also having a wide selection of classically colored boots, flats and heels.

On TikTok, countless creators credit their outfits coming together perfectly through use of the sandwich method. One of the best parts about this method is the creativity that the user gets to explore, showcased on TikTok. The sandwich method is the perfect way to bring an elevated touch to a previously simple outfit with ease. Next time you’re at a loss for what to wear, try the sandwich method and save yourself some time!
