There is nothing quite like starting a new television series and feeling absolutely transported to the time period and invested in the characters. That is exactly how many of us felt while watching Love Story: JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. It is so easy to get hooked on their story and the historical accuracy of the series, but one of the most mesmerizing aspects is the fashion.

As decades pass, Carolyn remains an iconic symbol of minimalistic fashion, and this series is only a reminder. I felt myself wondering how she could make the most simple pieces look so elegant and chic. In recent years, fashion has become marked by maximalism and funky accessories, and many enjoy embracing the 80s, but is Carolyn’s timeless style bound to make an intense comeback?

From her Selmina Optique sunglasses to her kitten heels, Carolyn was a girl of consistency and practicality. Carolyn established her style while working as a publicist for Calvin Klein, embodying the brand’s neutrality. As her relationship with JFK Jr. developed, she remained authentic while naturally elevating her style — perhaps this is one of the reasons her style is so captivating. Even as she gained more attention and fame, she felt relatable. Neither she nor John were known for flashing designer logos or wearing over-the-top statements.

In episode 4 of Love Story, Carolyn borrows John’s white button-down shirt and pairs it with a black maxi skirt. Her boss, Calvin Klein, compliments the outfit and how Carolyn styles it. Carolyn says she “just threw it on” representing her effortless style that so many chase. This noteworthy outfit is a recreation of one of her most iconic looks. In a world of fleeting trends and social media fads, it is refreshing for viewers to see someone dress so naturally.

Just as often as Carolyn could be seen in a slip skirt, JFK Jr. could be seen sporting a backwards cap. The television series captures John’s effortless mix of an “old money” style and relaxed streetwear, bringing many people back to the 90s. For someone who grew up as a “prince,” he dressed in a way that felt personal and lived-in. The show places significant emphasis on his fixation with hats. John is often seen biking through New York City with a backwards cap on. While the couple didn’t make a point to dress cohesively, their two styles merge to create a classic visual.

With five more highly-anticipated episodes left in Love Story, we can expect plenty more outfits and accessories to feel inspired by. Not only do they inspire a sense of simplicity, but they are a refreshing reminder to dress with confidence and freedom. Now is a perfect time to embrace outfit repeating, trustworthy basics, and capsule wardrobes as Carolyn Besette-Kennedy did.
