Harry Styles Is Back: Behind His New Aesthetic and What This Means for Concert Outfits
Written by Robin Schleusner
On Friday, March 6, Harry Styles released his fourth album, Kiss All The Time, Disco, Occasionally, creating buzz and excitement for pop music fans. With the new album came a new aesthetic to match his latest musical era.
Styles has always shifted his style from tour to tour, giving each their own distinct energy.
During his first solo tour, Live On Tour (2017-2018), Styles sported suits, but with his own touch, adding the flair and personality that he’s known for in his style with frilly details, florals, bold patterns, and sparkles.
His next tour, Love On Tour (2021-2023), supported his second and third album, Fine Line and Harry’s House, and leaned heavily into playful, colorful fashion. During the first leg of the tour, for Fine Line, his outfits were fairly consistent in structure, being a dress shirt and dress pants with suspenders. But the colors and patterns varied each night.
The Harry’s House leg of the tour, however, saw much more variety. Onesies, open vests, sparkles, patterns, and heart motifs were aspects of some of the most memorable looks of the tour.
Styles’ outfits tend to set a “theme” for each tour and often mirror the mood of the music he’s performing. Fans have historically embraced these themes as well, showing up to the concert dressed in bright colors, bold patterns, and playful looks inspired by his own.
The fact that Styles debuts a new outfit almost every night adds to the excitement of the concert experience. Fans often speculate and make guesses about what he’ll wear next. Because of that tradition, many are curious to see what he might wear on his upcoming tour, Together, Together.
After two years of touring, Styles took much-needed time off. The break built anticipation for fans about when he would return, or even curiosity as to whether he had been making music during that time.
In late January, he announced and released the first single of the new era, Aperture, marking his official comeback.
In the music video for the song, Styles appeared in a collared shirt, and had a briefcase. He’s continued that look during recent appearances, such as the Brits, where he’s wearing a tie and another collared shirt. During his One Night Only performance in his hometown of Manchester, UK, and later released on Netflix, he layered a collared shirt, this time under a crewneck with trousers.
Despite the album’s title, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally., there seems to be nothing inherently “disco” about this new style. Styles instead seems to be trading the colorful onesies of Love On Tour for something more understated, almost office-inspired outfits.
An uncertainty about this tour’s outfits is that he has not been wearing Gucci in his recent appearances and performances. Styles began a close relationship with Gucci in 2017, and they have since been custom-making his tour outfits. Without Gucci, he is essentially a “free agent” when it comes to designers.
There’s no telling what his wardrobe will look like for the official tour for this album, Together, Together, until the tour actually begins. But from what it looks like so far, we can expect a continuation of normcore, office-style fashion.
So, if you were lucky enough to get tickets for the tour beginning this summer, here’s how you can plan an outfit to match this aesthetic.
First, expect to see a large presence of ties. Fans can incorporate ties in creative ways, like tops or skirts made of ties, ties worn as belts, or simply styled traditionally with an outfit.
Sparkles and shimmer will likely still make an appearance, too, or on the opposing end, wearing tailored blouses and classic button ups fit Styles’ professional vibe.
Finally, Styles himself urges fans that comfort is key on this tour. Pairing a statement top with jeans or trousers and a comfortable shoe like a sneaker, flat, or boot, will make sure that you’re ready to dance. Whichever clothing route you choose to take, the most important aspect is to wear what makes you comfortable and confident.
